His faith journey led him to Trinity United Church of Christ, where Reverend Jeremiah Wright mentored him. Obama's 2008 election as America's first Black president represented a historic milestone, inspiring millions while revealing persistent racial divisions. His presidency embodied the long arc of the civil rights movement.

# John Vianney (1786–1859) **The Unqualified Priest** Jean-Marie Vianney grew up a shepherd's son in post-Revolutionary France, where priests had been hunted and Masses held in barns. He could barely read Latin. Seminary professors in Lyon nearly dismissed him—twice—calling him intellectually unfit. In 1815, his bishop reluctantly ordained him anyway, then exiled him to Ars, a village of 230 souls northwest of Lyon where, one observer noted, "nobody prayed." Vianney stayed forty-one years. He preached simply, heard confessions sixteen hours a day, and slept three hours a night. Penitents arrived by stagecoach from across Europe. He established an orphanage for girls, La Providence, funding it through trust alone when money ran out. By 1855, 20,000 pilgrims visited Ars annually. He died exhausted at seventy-three. **Why It Matters:** Vianney's life reminds us that God uses the unlikely and unimpressive—that faithfulness in obscurity can reshape a nation's soul.

Distillation; dropping, a town in Judah, in the neighbourhood, probably, of Bethlehem (Neh. 7:26; 1 Chr. 2:54). Two of David's guards were Netophathites (1 Chr. 27:13, 15). It has been identified with the ruins of Metoba, or Um Toba, to the north-east of Bethlehem.
